Research and study

The Science and Industry Museum reopened its doors to visitors on 14 August. However, the Research Centre study area, home to our archive of original source material and reference books, remains closed for a while longer.

The team is busy preparing for its safe reopening from the week of 2 November and looks forward to welcoming you back.

During these challenging few months, our priority has been to care for the collection and prepare to safely reopen our museums to the public. Our team continues to work through the complexities and practicalities of safely operating our archives and libraries.

When the study area reopens, there will be some noticeable changes. You will need to pre-book an appointment in advance of your visit, wear a face covering while you are with us and use social distancing. Pre-booking will be available through our website shortly.

Our collection—and the inspirational stories it contains—remains open online. You can find further information about the archives we care for via our online collection and the archive catalogue.

We are providing a limited enquiry service while we are closed. If you have an enquiry about the collections, please email us at We aim to respond within 20 working days, but responses are currently taking a little longer.
